I had a fun "day after Christmas" session yesterday with this wonderful family. Poor little Jake was not too excited to be getting family photos done. He was just plain worn out from Christmas but I managed to get some good family shots anyway! Here are some of my favorites from their session!

I really like this family. They are not only beautiful but so sweet and some of the nicest people I think I have ever met! I have photographed them for many years now and I just adore getting to see their children grow up! I feel so special to have them come back year after year! You guys are great! :)

One Super Fun Family Session!| Gilbert Family Photographer

I have to admit I was a little worried about how my family session was going to go last Saturday because of the extreme heat here in Arizona, however that feeling vanished as soon as I met them and learned that they LOVE the outdoors here (heat & all) I guess Mr. Peters decided to ride his bike to our session all the way from Scottsdale (we met over in Mesa). So this family was definitely not afraid of a little HEAT!! Now I love to shoot in the rain, snow, heat you name it I just really enjoy getting to do what I LOVE!!!! Anyways, I am glad they were troopers and we all had a great time taking photos! Here are a few of my favorites.

What have I been up to lately? This little girl turned FOUR years old last week!!!

This guy has been keeping us busy with all of his basketball games....

Can you tell these were all taken with my little point and shoot camera? I just got a new one and I am LOVING it. (For my personal family photos anyways!) It is the Nikon Coolpix. It is nice to be able to just carry it around in my purse for everyday shots. These kids grow too fast and I do not carry around my equipment everywhere so I needed something small but good.

I love that I am able to capture ME with my kiddos :)

and now I am off to relax for a week!

Things I love Thursdays|Photography Giveaway

1)I love this blog. Becky Higgins LLC. Check it out. I am almost positive you will love it too.

Becky shares ideas and solution based scrapbooking products. Her Project Life kit is on my Christmas list (hint, hint husband) I am a fan on her facebook page and she gives ideas on what to take a photo of occassionally or maybe every day. I try not to be on facebook every single day. It is hard but I try! So for instance one day she gives a tip to "Photograph a child or loved one with their favorite books." or "Photograph the scene inside your vehicle." Although at all my sessions I do strive to get all the little details on that particular day, her tips are great for everyday life and capturing the in- between moments. Below are some photos I took with her wonderful ideas!!!!

This was "Take a picture of a current collection."
Here is what my oldest son collects...football cards and basketball cards. He has 4 big boxes full and many binders full of these cards. The boy loves sports.

And this little munchkin loves her stuffed puppy dogs. Can you tell?

I can't wait to get the kit and place these photos in it! I have many more too!

2) I love this new show on TLC called Extreme Couponing I was amazed at the amount of money these women were able to save on groceries. One of the ladies paid under $5 for over $1200 of merchandise! My husband watched it along side of me and he just sat there with his jaw open looking at me like "woman you better start clipping" ha ha ha. I guess I should look into this "extreme couponing" more. It does seem like a great idea. Do you use coupons? Do you have any tips? Leave me a comment if you do! I would love to hear from you if you do!

3) I love Chick Fil A and so does my daughter. She gets to play and I get to blog. They have free Wi-Fi here. Awesome. I actually didn't even miss the shake I normally get while visiting, I just brought my sobee water as my treat! Don't worry people my daughter did get a kids meal. I didn't just use their free Wi-Fi and play area and not buy anything. That would be rude!!!

Things I love Thursdays

I really love reading blogs. Do you love them? I find myself going from one blog to the next just devouring all the information, ideas and inspiration. For instance the other day I read this blog and one tip she had was to chop a bunch of onions and freeze them so you have them ready for meals. WHY have I not ever thought about that before? Our freezer is well stocked with frozen onions, green peppers, yellow peppers and red peppers!!

I thought this would be fun, I will share with you the Things I love every Thursday (when I have the time of course!!) Want to join me? Go to DiapersDiary.net to start.

I will start with this magazine. It is called Active Moms. I love this magazine. They feature LOTS of family events and activities each month. I would of never known about the story time at our local Barnes and Noble if I hadn't picked up this magazine. We love story time. Today we packed a lunch, grabbed the camera and headed off to the Mesa Arts Center for free music. I learned about that event from the magazine too! Pretty cool, huh? You can pick up the magazine at the library in Gilbert and I am sure they have to be at other libraries and I think I have seen them at the YMCA before. You can also sign up online to get the magazine emailed to you every month!

Here are some pictures I took of my girl today while we were out and about.

This is my favorite, her little personality just shines through on this one. She is such a happy girl!

yes, we had a clothing change. Not by choice...we couldn't find the restrooms at the Mesa Arts Center. If you have a toddler you know you only have about 30 seconds to find that potty!!!! Lucky for us we had clothes in the car!

I let her pack her own lunch. This is what she packed:
Fruit snack, 1 piece of celery and water, oh and a bag of crackers that she ate on the way there! I would like to lie and say I fixed her a healthier meal once we got home but I did NOT! She did eat her veggies at dinner though!

It was so great to take pictures for this fun-loving family on a beautiful Sunday morning. I knew I would love doing this session when I talked to Deanne over the phone about it. It is not very often the WHOLE family gets to get together since some live out of state, so hearing how excited Deanne was about everyone getting together was wonderful! I know I love getting to see my family from out of state so it was nice to spend time with their family for an hour and be surrounded by the love they share!!!

This little boy was such a pleasure to photograph. He made some of the funniest faces and noises! I just love this age when they are discovering how to make noises and funny faces!

Oh and this baby boy has lots of style too, even my 13 yr. old son commented on how cool his "volcom" shirt is! I didn't even know they made Vans shoes that small, so cute!

I bribe my kids with candy & ice cream :)

So don't feel bad if you need to bribe your kids at our photography session because I was getting a whole lot of this.....

ATTITUDE when I was asking the kids to take a few photos for me at the park the other day....then I offered a piece of candy. My littlest one went for it and was ready to smile for me. My older child knew he could negotiate even more than candy from me. So he negotiated a trip to Dairy Queen. I can't believe I have never had the Chocolate Extreme Blizzard before. It is AMAZING! I will be hurting when I get back to the gym...any day now. It has been a rough 2 weeks with a sinus infection and ear infection. The hardest part has been getting back into the habit of going to the gym after feeling cruddy! Wish me luck for making it there tomorrow!!!

This is just after the negotiations took place, little C just hopped right up and put her arms around her brother without me even having to ask after she heard "ice cream".

Please forgive my mobile phone pictures :) but here are my two cuties enjoying their ice cream.

This little family and I had originally planned on going out to South Mountain but since it was cold and wet and rainy this day we changed plans at the last minute. This Mom liked old buildings we headed to downtown Phoenix to do their session since it was the first place that came to mind when she asked about old buildings...since our family just had ours done there a few weeks ago by the wonderful Mandy Hank :) I really loved the area (and our photos were so so so wonderful!!!)
We had a great session there and luckily didn't get rained on and kept warm!

The two little kiddos kept me laughing and did such a great job for the camera!

I have never heard it before today and it is different than anything I usually listen to (sometimes- I have been told by my husband- I don't like to try anything new like new food) so when I was making the slideshow I realized what a really good song it is and now I'm excited I like new music ha ha.

My husband and I took the kids on a cruise out of Texas last month and there were so many people from Texas on the ship. It was amazing how nice & friendly everyone was that we met and most of them were from Texas. We were surprised by people passing by on the ship smiling and saying "good morning". So my husband and I joked that it would be so nice to live there {both knowing very well that we will never leave Arizona- because we both love it here} Anyway it was so nice when I got a call from this wonderful family to take their family pictures because they are from- you guessed it- Texas! And the moment I met them I knew we were going to have such a great session. They too are very nice & friendly and I just loved their little family!

What should we wear? This is a question I get asked a lot. So I thought I would include some visual inspiration here to make things easier for you. Believe me I am in the process of trying to find what our family is wearing in just a few weeks for our family session so that is what made me start to think about this. Last year I tried to avoid being too matchy match and just ended up with a headache!!! This year I have these little guides to help! I hope they make it easier for you too! I think I will try to convince my 12 year old boy to wear that pink tie... yeah right!!!

I had a hard time giving this little girl back to her Mom after holding her, I just wanted to keep holding her! She is just such a sweetheart. I am so glad I got to capture some great photos for her Mommy to look back at and remember how sweet she was at this age! Six months is probably my favorite age for both of my kids. Some photo editing fun! I love when I have time on Friday's to participate in Fix it Friday's....

This is the original photo taken by Amy Locurto. What a cutie, huh?

Here is my basic edit. In lightroom I just cropped and rotated the photo to focus in a bit more on those lovely eyes and then brightened it a bit, added some contrast, warmed it up a touch and sharpened it for the web. Oh and I also enhanced her eyes a touch with the saturation brush.

Stay at Home Mom madness

Sometimes I really struggle at being a stay at home Mom. I feel like I am always running to the store because I forgot something or we are out of milk or eggs or this or that. There is always something to do, can any of you Moms relate? Well I thought I would try something new to make myself feel not so crazy! I made a menu which took me all day to do and I felt like a total failure because it took sooooo long, was very annoying and I didn't feel like it was something I could do every single week. So a friend of mine gave me the link for this website that she uses called plan to eat and I checked it out and made a menu for next week in 30 minutes! It does cost after the 30 day free trial but it is so cheap that to me it is worth the $3 or $4 a month or one time $39 that it costs because it will save me so much time and money to have things planned {plus maybe keep me from feeling like such a failure mom ha ha ha}.

Here is what I made for breakfast this morning {without having to run up to the store in the morning to get it, it was already all in the refrigerator!}

So breakfast time was less hectic at our house this Saturday morning even with my 3 yr. old making an oatmeal mess which I am pretty sure was quite fun for her!

Ahhh now it is naptime for us!

Not Me Monday

Welcome to "Not Me! Monday"- something I found on MkMama's blog {one of my new favorite blogs to read}. Not Me Monday was born out of her desire to admit some of her imperfections and reveal a few moments she would rather forget!

So on to myself, things I did not do....{wink, wink}

This weekend I did NOT miss going to the gym and eat garbage all weekend. I did not lose my cool with my sweet little 3 yr. old just because she was screaming ALL day Sat-Sun because she was not feeling well and tell her she was making me CRAZY!!! Definitely not something I would do. I also did not tell my dear husband that I was tired from taking care of this sick child all week and I really need a break. That would of been selfish of me. I did not get mad at my dear son when he rode his bike to get nachos for his sister for not bringing me any change. I just said thank you for getting the nachos for your sister. I did not complain about the scale and then eat frozen yogurt at Sams club with little C. And this morning I did not feel stressed and want to crawl back into bed when little C was screaming at the top of her lungs again. Oh and there is no way I am sitting here on the computer while little C eats her toast and watches Super Reader on t.v.

I did not force my son to take a picture even though he hates getting his picture taken now!

I did not let her go outside with no shoes and run around for 10 minutes while she was sick either.....that is not her.

That was very therapeutic!

I heart faces- fix it friday

Today is Friday, yaaaay! I was excited I had a new photo to edit this morning when I logged onto my computer. If you are a photographer and want to practice your editing skills or would just like to learn more about photography to take better pictures of your children go here for lots of tips and fun stuff to do!

This is the original photo taken by Susan Keller. I already love it as soon as I see it. I love the closeness of mother and son, the light in the background and they just look so happy :)

First I wanted to crop it a little to get more of them than the background. Then I ran Coffee Shop Baby Powder {Coffee Shop Actions}and adjusted the opacity a bit, then ran

Pioneer Woman's boost, slight lighten, warm and sharpened for the web!

I participated in fix it friday today at I heart faces
I got to "fix" this photo....it was one that really didn't need much fixing to me! I love the original already, a newborn baby foot. I love newborn baby feet!

Here is one of my edits:

First I rotated it so you went straight from the baby's foot to the face in the background. On the original I was drawn to the foot that was kind of hidden, I think the viewers attention should be to the cute face of this newborn. Then I used one of my favorite actions from Pioneer Woman- Seventies, then ran the boost from her at 50% and sharpened for the web.

This one I used Sepia from Pioneer Woman and Hasslebad Softar action because I wanted the foot and everything else a little softer looking. Sharpened for the web and that's it.

I am so blessed to have these two great kids in my life. I love seeing their brother/sister bond that they have formed. Jordan is such a great big brother, so protective & kind hearted towards his little sister. And Cassia just adores him and wants to be just like him! These photos I took of them the other day just make me smile. I tried to just step back and let them be them and then got a few of Jordan by himself {mr. going to junior high boy- yikes! I can't believe it!}.

I love watching my son play basketball, he is a natural at it! I was so proud of him at his game last weekend. At the beginning of the game he missed a few shots but he didn't let it get to him. He came out in the 2nd half and gave it all he had. I have never seen such determination on this boy's face. It really made my heart burst with pride.

I realized how much I just love editing photos, any photos really when I recently edited some of my sis-n-laws photos when I was fixing her laptop for her. So when I saw this website I knew it would be fun to edit this little doll....

Original photo:

Basic edit: Used slightly lighten action x3 by Pioneer Woman Photography, corrected the color, used the boost action (PW Photography), bring out the eyes action (PW Photography), used a Pop & Sizzle action that I can't remember where I got it from but I LOVE it. Then sharpened for the web.

I got a little carried away, little C was taking a long nap so I got to play :)

Easter Pictures

We had a great time this year at John's brother and his wife's home for Easter. Of course we had a wonderful bbq, the kids went swimming, had a huge egg hunt and we ended the perfect day with a dance contest for the kids! It was so much fun! Enjoy the photos below!!!

Cassia dancing to "Single Ladies" by Beyonce.... her aunt taught her this dance about a year ago and she still remembers and does it when she hears the song!

she really got into her dancing, it was hilarious!

Jordan was so embarrassed for some reason, must be the age!!!! I think that is when I started to hate getting up in front of people too. He did great though, I was so glad he got out there and danced!

My husband didn't really understand the need to get Cassia all dolled up to go to a pool party, but I know my sister-n-law did, look at how cute her daughter's hair and dress is too!!!! My Mom always made sure all the kids looked nice on Easter Sunday so I try to follow her tradition- I say 'try" because notice my older child was not all dressed up in his Sunday clothes.

He talked me into letting him be "comfy" :)

Happy Easter!

We just dyed the eggs, made sure the Easter bunny had everything ready for us, had a Nerf gun fight, yes you did read this right- a nerf gun fight.....the funny thing is I actually enjoyed it!!! Probably not so much the nerf guns as much as spending time with the kids and my husband :) We are off to bed now! I hope you all enjoy your Easter! I know I am looking forward to spending it with the family and getting to see the kids search for Easter eggs, and that chocolate cake I bought at Costco earlier, yummmmmy.

I was trying out a lens I borrowed from my friend to see if I liked it or not (the canon 85 mm 1.8) and I do love it! The sharpness is so much better than my 50 mm 1.8 it is definitely on my list of things to buy! Cassia was my little model......she is so full of these funny faces it cracks me up!

The Holidays were great this year, I am truly blessed to have such wonderful family and friends, although I did miss my own family in Nebraska, it was still a nice Christmas! New Years Eve I spent quietly at home with just Cassia, Jordan was at his Dad's and John was off to snowboard, he asked if we wanted to come but I would much rather stay here where it is warm, I grew up with the snow, it looks pretty but it is way to cold for me!!!

So since it is a new year, I wanted to make some new goals

I met Jennifer about 10 years ago when I started working at Prudential (now Liberty Mutual) She works in the Quality Assurance Department and does such a wonderful job of making sure the customers and the agents are well taken care of. I would not of made it to where I was in the company when I left if it were not for her and her wonderful advice! I was thrilled when she contacted me to do photos for her and her family. The last time I saw her she was pregnant with little Asa who is now 3 years old!

I am so glad that this little family moved to arizona.....

Meet the Murdock family, (John's sister and her family).... moved here from Utah back in the spring and I am so happy to have them here. It is hard for me to be so far away from all of my family so when John's family is around I love it. My husband calls Emily my "BFF" because we are always doing something together. before we left for our cruise last week i snapped this of cassia at the playground.....this was about 30 minutes before she threw-up all over herself after we left the playground, for all the mom's that were there that day I prayed that your children wouldn't get sick too, and boy did I feel bad for taking her, but she really had NO symptoms before throwing up, besides about 5 minutes before she started to get pale and quiet :( poor girl. she was sick up until the day we left and was miraculously well the morning we left! Anyway I just love this picture and thought I would share..... what do you think of the color? I tried something new that Mandy Hank taught me (for photographers- I set the white balance to K- kelvin and just played with it until I liked the results, I really like the way it came out, so much better than when I use Auto White Balance!!!)

Back from Vacation!

My wonderful husband took us all to on a cruise last week to Acapulco, Zihuatanejo & Manzanillo Mexico. It was so nice to get to spend time with him and the kids. It was totally worth the 5 lbs I gained eating all the delicious food all week!!!! So today was back to dieting and laundry and errands but I felt great, totally refreshed and blessed to have had such a great vacation. I was even happier tonight when I got the kids to bed and was able to sit down and look at all the photos, I only took my point and shoot with us I just couldn't see taking all of my equipment with me on a ship!

Here is one of the kids and I in the dining room for dinner, they really know how to spoil you on Carnival cruises I tell you, if you want to be spoiled a Carnival cruise is the way to go......

Our first stop in Acapulco. We liked it, however both my husband and I could of gone without someone coming up to us every 2 minutes asking us to buy something or if we wanted a massage!

Our 2nd stop in Zihuatanejo, our favorite place of all!! We went to a little beach and the boys went snorkeling while the girls relaxed and played at the beach, with no one asking us to buy anything- HEAVEN!!!

And Cassia sitting in the window of the ship in her new little Mexican dress we bought, it looked a lot bigger before she got dressed, I guess my neice will be getting it in a few weeks!

Sarah & Shane's Wedding

I met with Sarah and her bridesmaids at the Sanctuary in Scottsdale, where they were already almost completely ready. Sarah looked happy and calm, which was probably helped by the great job her bridesmaids were doing so that she would have a wonderful day.

The place looked amazing with a theme of deep red & black & gorgeous mountain views. The ceremony was perfect and peaceful as they exchanged their own wedding vows. From there they were headed off to their lovely reception with lots of delicious food, music and dancing.

Congratulations Sarah & Shane!!!!! May your life together be as lovely as your wedding day was!
A special thanks to Becky Eden for helping me shoot this wedding, I appreciate all your help that day!!!

Jordan's football team made the STATE FINALS!!!

Jordan's team had a really good football game last week, I was so happy they won and will be in the state finals for Pop Warner this Saturday! He scared me at the game though I had to leave the game early for a wedding I was helping another photographer with and as I was leaving the parking lot I saw there was a kid laying on the ground, so I called John and said "that is not Jordan is it?" and he said it was and he didn't know yet if he was okay.... so I turned the car around and drove up to the fence where the coaches and meds were on the field, I couldn't see my boy, it was about 2 minutes before he got up and limped to the cart to be carried away I was just about to go out on the field but luckily he got up (luckily for him cause he always tells me not to go running out there if he gets hurt) I yelled to him to see if he was okay and he was just in so much pain I could tell, poor guy! So as soon as I knew he was being taken care of I was off to help with the beautiful wedding. I did talk to him right after the game and he said he blacked out, but he is doing okay and icing his knee. When I saw the tape I realized I probably would have RAN to the field if I had saw the hit, it was HARD and he just laid there for a good 30 seconds to a minute ugh!!! Guess it was a really good thing I didn't see it.

Today is his birthday so I am off to pick him up at school and take him to lunch! He is 12 years old!!! Almost a teenager oh my! Where do the years go!!!!

Curly hair & Football

We tried curly....

ended up needing some citra-shine product for the frizzies, sorry girl you have hair like your Mommy! It ended up not being so bad after her nap she flattened it a little, I wish I had the before nap photo though! You would totally be laughing at it!

Oh I love having a little girl!

Now for some football photos! I do love having a boy too! I must admit my son is a "momma's boy" and I kinda like it!!! Now I don't usually know what is going on in the game, in fact I usually have to ask his Dad what happened because I have no idea, but I do know that I love to get out there and watch the game and cheer for him!

What a great game boys!!!

Fall Break

Last week was fall break, Jordan was out of school and so the very last day, Friday I thought I would take us to do something fun. I mentioned the Arizona State Fair, Arizona Science Center, Amazing Jakes....but the kids said (well Jordan said and Cassia just agrees with whatever big brother says!) they just wanted to go to the mall. FINE with me! So we headed to San Tan Mall and shopped a little and played at the play area. It was nice to get out and take them BOTH some place and spend time with them. Usually Jordan is off with his friends and it is just Cassia and I.

Don't they both have the same exact expression on their faces? I swear they are both saying to me, with their eyes, "Mom, enough with the camera!"

All is back to normal now, my laundry is almost caught up. I don't know why Jordan has 15 dirty towels and only 3 pairs of dirty socks for the week.....pretty wierd, huh?

Kristina and Carl's Engagement Session

Here are some of my favorite images from Kristina and Carl's Engagement session. They are getting married this April! I don't know how I get so lucky to have the nicest people to photograph! Kristina and Carl are another INCREDIBLY NICE couple that I had the priveledge of photographing last weekend at the Scottsdale Convention Center. I love shooting there, it's an awesome place to take photos, especially engagement photos.

Flu stinks.....

So I have not seen my Mom in almost a whole year and I was so excited because she came into town last Thursday! What happens Friday morning? The flu hits our house, of course!!! My son Jordan woke up with a fever and stomach ache, then Saturday I started coming down with it, by Wed. I made us both appts. to our doctors. I had an upper resp. infection my doc said, but then later that day I started getting all the usual flu symptoms too...and Jordan had an asthma flare and some virus that has some name I have NEVER heard of (coxsackie virus) wierd. The funny part is that I had appts for all of us to get a flu shot on TUES!!! Ugh, guess I should have made it weeks ago.

Anyway I am just praying that no one else here gets the flu, especially my Mom since she has diabetes. She left tonight and I was just really sad I was sick when she was here because it seems like I didn't even get to laugh and giggle with here like we always do because I felt like my chest was on fire the entire time she was here. So anyway instead of sitting here crying like a baby (did that all the way home from the airport) I am checking out the neat photos my awesome friend Alisha took for us while she was here and trying to figure out when I can go visit my Mom in Omaha!

I LOVE going to J's football games now, the first year I really struggled because I never really liked football, however I have really learned to love it. I still don't understand all of it, I just try to follow my son as closely as I can and try not to lose him in the crowd of football players!

J asks me almost every day if I think he can make it to the NBA or NFL... my response, always the same- "Of course you can with lots of practice and hard work you can do anything you put your mind to."

I want him to know that I support him and believe in him...

whatever he chooses to do- football, basketball, President of the USA, whatever he decides he would like to do when he grows up!

Lee & James Wedding

Lee and James' wedding was a quiet intimate ceremony. They had all of their loved ones come and stand beside them for the ceremony which I thought was so sweet.

I have known Lee for a few years now, her son was on my son's football team and she was always the team Mom and WOW she was an excellent team mom. She was always taking care of our boys playing out there in the heat. She always made sure they were ok and had plenty of water and she is just so darn nice! She even offered to watch Cassia for me when I worked last year for a short while! You can't help but love her! I am so happy for her!

This is her and her son Grant.

All of the candles just made it so romantic and peaceful I loved it!

Her son designed this to go on the rings, so neat.

Congratulations you two! Have a wonderful life together!

Click here for some mommy inspiration I found while taking a much needed break after 2 days of no naps, temper tantrums, and not getting anything accomplished it seemed. I have to remember that I do accomplish so much all day long, just in the little things I am doing for our family. Sometimes as Mom's I think we put too much pressure on ourselves, trying to make everything perfect and make everyone in the house happy. My good friend from many many years ago posted this on her facebook page today....

I am pretty sure it is quite impossible to have a spotless house with a 2 yr old in the home, for me anyway!

First day of school!

It's that time again! We had a fun summer and are excited for this school year! I met my son's teacher the other day and she seems really fun and nice. I still can't believe he is already in the 6th grade, that just seems so old to me!

Last night he was trying on outfits and I sounded like my Mom when I told him "it's school, not a fashion show"
Here are his shoes that seemed to be the most important part of the outfit for him so I made sure to take a photo.

I thought he was going to throw that pine cone at me when I showed up at the bus stop with my camera ha ha, no he wouldn't do that but he was not very pleased. I really hadn't planned to GO to the bus stop but he forgot his water bottle and I already had my camera out so....I embarrassed the poor guy!
